Loyal Plevin workers receive long service awards

Two colleagues have received a special award after notching up a total of 30 years’ loyal service at a family-owned Mossley firm.

Andy Foley and Mark Griffin joined wood recycling firm R Plevin & Sons Ltd within a month of each other back in 1996, when John Major was Prime Minister and Britpop acts like Oasis and Blur were dominating the music charts.

They were the first people hired by Managing Director Jamie Plevin to work at the company’s Cheshire Street site.

Jamie decided to recognise their hard work and dedication with a special award, which he presented to the duo during a surprise ceremony.

He said: “As a local family firm, people like Andy and Mark are the lifeblood of Plevin.

“They have made an enormous contribution to our success over the years, and have displayed a loyalty and work ethic rarely seen in the world of business today.

“I would like to thank each of them for their invaluable input at Plevin. Here’s to the next 15 years!”

R Plevin & Sons Ltd is one of the UK’s leading wood processing and recycling companies.

It collects, processes and distributes 600,000 tonnes of wood a year and prevents 200,000 tonnes of waste going to landfill annually.

Family-owned Plevin purchased the Mossley site, also its head office, in late 1995. The company now employs 65 people at the site – 54 of whom live within 10 miles.

Football enthusiast Mark, of Lorne Street in Mossley, serves as a director of Mossley AFC in his spare time.

The 38-year-old, who works as a Machine Operator at Plevin, is in no doubt as to why he has stayed with the company all these years.

“It’s down to the people”, he said. “There is a good atmosphere both inside and outside of work and there is a real family feel to the place.”

Andy, 44, of Bylands Fold in Dukinfield, is Transport Manager and helps to oversee the company’s fleet of vehicles.

He said: “I have known the Plevin family for a long time and they are good people to work with.

“For me it’s a case of: if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. I enjoy my job, I live nearby and Plevin is a good company to work for.

“I’ve had no reason to look for another job and hope to be here for many more years yet.

“It has been nice seeing the company grow during my time here. When I first started we could list and organise all of our wagons using one sheet of A4 paper.

“Things have moved on a lot since then but I still enjoy my job as much as my first day 15 years ago.”

R Plevin & Sons Ltd was formed in 1973 by Manchester-born Roy Plevin, who had started trading as a waste wood merchant four years earlier.

Today, the family-owned firm sources waste wood from council civic amenity sites, skip hire firms, pallet manufacturers and joinery workshops.

Customers within the animal bedding sector include major supermarkets and large-scale pet wholesalers.
